Defining new roles in a world of artificial intelligence

Midjourney Impresses Everyone. Or does it?

Recently the world of photographers was turned upside down by an image-making platform called Midjourney. Midjourney allows you to enter a text prompt to get a resulting image. Prompts are text cues given to a machine to get a desired result.

For instance, using the prompt “/imagine” followed by the text “ Painted portrait of a mixed race 46-year-old male. Vincent Van Gogh style. Very short hair. Large eyes. Pronounced eyebrows. Pronounced jawbone. Very close up,” Midjourney gave the image below. It is what it believes you want to see.

The sobering reality of the A.I. images you see

We are all presented with amazing A.I. generated results. And so, cannot help but be astonished at images produced by, what we are told, is a “simple” text command. But the reality behind this is a bit more complicated. A.I. artists must learn an interface that is nothing short of learning a new program language.

Midjourney can even emulate styles and famous artist signature looks

There is a big difference between getting a fantastic image out of an A.I. interface and getting a fantastic image that you wanted. To get anything that resembles what you see in your head from Midjourney, you have to:

  • Start with an initial prompt
  • Look at the result
  • Adjust your prompt
  • Look at the new result
  • repeat

To get this image, I had to rewrite my "imagine" prompt over 36 times

Your ability to get the image that best resembles your intention is a skill that is not easy. Midjourney’s Userguide includes Commands, Parameters, and custom and advanced prompts that you add to any prompt. Like all interfaces, some people using the software can generate excellent results.

A.I. in your business. What is next for you?

The reality of Midjourney A.I. image-making highlights the truth of all A.I. in business today. The photo of the dog, ballerina, or beautiful blonde will only be as good as the command you give Midjourney. The future of image-making belongs to those who arm themselves to the teeth with an excellent prompt vocabulary.

Corporations will need people who are aware of which A.I. tools to use. People who know which A.I. tools are out there. Where to implement these tools, and how to look over them. Corporations will need people who can put a monetary value on the switch from normal tasks to Artificial intelligence-led tasks.

Depending on the type of prompt you give Midjourney, image styles can be really different and original

Will A.I. eliminate jobs? The answer is a resounding Yes! But the correct implementation, maintenance, and research connected with A.I. as a tool is a skill that will be in great demand in the future.

Like a poorly made saw, or hammer can make building furniture a nightmare, certain A.I. tools are terrible and don’t deliver net gain over traditional task execution. Knowing when to use A.I. and when not to use A.I. will be a task itself.

The future belongs to people who can effectively and efficiently implement A.I. into the workflow of a corporation. The future belongs to the artificial intelligence strategist.
